Anesthesia

The patient is administered with anesthesia after being brought into the operating room. Breast augmentation is usually performed under general anesthesia. An anesthesiologist or a registered anesthetist nurse will administer the anesthesia.

The patient may experience nausea, grogginess and other mild side effects related to the anesthesia for some hours following the procedure. A majority of patients can return home on the day of the procedure itself after the anesthesia side-effects have worn off. The patient should ask someone responsible to take her back home after the breast augmentation procedure.

Placing the Incisions

The next step after administering the anesthesia is placing the incisions in pre-determined areas in a precise and inconspicuous manner.

The incisions may be placed beneath the breast crease, in the armpit region, around the areola border, or around the navel area in some cases. As far as possible, the surgeon will place the incision in the natural creases to ensure that the consequent scarring remains discreet.

Placement of Implants

The surgeon can place breast implants beneath the pectoral muscle or in front of the pectoral muscle right behind the breast tissue. The surgeon will evaluate the implant size and breast anatomy of the patient before deciding on implant placement.

Incision Closure

The surgeon will place the implants and adjust them into position. Then they will carefully seal the incisions using either removable or absorbable sutures. They will then put temporary drain tubes beneath the skin in the incision areas. The surgeon will direct the patient to keep the incision sites clean and dry to mitigate the risk of infection.  

Wearing Surgical Bra

In a few days following the procedure, the surgeon will replace the initial bandages with a special surgical bra. The patient must wear this special bra for several weeks. It is important to follow the surgeon’s instructions and wear this bra all the time (except when bathing).
