Body contouring after weight loss is plastic surgery that removes loose, excess skin and reshapes the body. It is often the final step after weight loss from bariatric surgery, GLP-1 medications like Ozempic®, or lifestyle change.
You lost the weight, but the loose skin stayed. Maybe you lost 50, 100, or more pounds. Now skin folds chafe, cause rashes, and hide the body you worked so hard to build. Diet and exercise cannot shrink stretched skin. At Naples Aesthetic Institute, we perform body contouring after weight loss for patients in Naples and Fort Myers, FL.
Removing skin is only half the work. Your surgeon also reshapes what remains, so your body looks balanced and natural, not just tighter.

What Is Body Contouring After Weight Loss?
After major weight loss, skin that stretched for years often cannot shrink back. The fat underneath is gone, but the skin stays the same size. Body contouring surgery removes that extra skin, lifts sagging tissue, and tightens what remains to fit your new frame. You may also hear it called skin removal surgery or plastic surgery after weight loss.
Loose skin is more than a cosmetic concern. It can cause chafing, rashes, and trouble finding clothes that fit. It can also make exercise uncomfortable. Research shows that body contouring improves quality of life, including body image and physical function.
Body contouring is the last stage of your weight loss journey, not a way to lose weight.

How Is Body Contouring Different After Ozempic or Other GLP-1s?
GLP-1 medications such as semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy®) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro®, Zepbound®) have changed weight loss. They have also changed how we plan surgery. Three differences matter:
- You may lose muscle along with fat. GLP-1 weight loss includes meaningful muscle loss. Less muscle under the skin changes how skin drapes and what a natural-looking result looks like.
- Your face may lose volume. Rapid weight loss often shows as facial hollowing and sagging, sometimes called “Ozempic face.” That is why facial rejuvenation often comes up, even if you came in about your abdomen.
- Healing needs extra care. In one large study, patients on semaglutide for six months or more before body contouring had more healing problems. Incisions reopened in about 5 percent of these patients, compared with under 3 percent of patients not on the medication.
None of this rules out surgery. We use it to plan your timing, nutrition, and care before and after your procedure.
“GLP-1 medications have given many of my patients a fresh start. Our job is to plan surgery around how those medications change the body, so your result heals well and looks like you.” Dr. Kiran Gill, MD, FACS
Which Procedures Are Part of Body Contouring After Weight Loss?
There is no single excess skin removal surgery. Your plan depends on where your loose skin sits, how much there is, and what matters most to you. If you are researching skin removal after weight loss, your consultation is where we map out which procedures fit your body.
Tummy Tuck
A tummy tuck removes loose skin from the abdomen and tightens the stomach muscles. It is where many patients start.
Extended Tummy Tuck
An extended tummy tuck carries the incision around the hips. It treats loose skin that wraps from the abdomen toward the back.
Panniculectomy
A panniculectomy removes the hanging apron of skin below the belly button without tightening muscle. It is often the right choice when comfort and hygiene matter most.
Mons Lift
A mons lift raises and tightens the pubic area, which often sags along with the abdomen. Many patients combine it with a tummy tuck.
Arm Lift
An arm lift removes hanging skin from the upper arms. We often pair it with liposuction to refine the shape.
Thigh Lift
A thigh lift removes loose skin from the inner thighs. It can make walking and exercise more comfortable.
Lower Body Lift
A lower body lift treats the abdomen, hips, outer thighs, and buttocks in one surgery that circles the waist. It suits patients whose loose skin wraps all the way around.
Back Lift
A back lift removes the rolls of skin above and below the bra line.
Breast Lift, Breast Augmentation, and Breast Reduction
Weight loss often leaves breasts deflated and lower on the chest. A breast lift raises the breasts and tightens the skin. Some patients add breast augmentation to restore fullness at the top of the breast. Others need a breast reduction when heavy tissue remains.
Gynecomastia (Male Chest Contouring)
Gynecomastia surgery removes leftover chest tissue and loose skin in men, leaving a chest in proportion with the rest of your body.
Liposuction
Liposuction removes stubborn pockets of fat, but it does not remove loose skin. It refines shape alongside skin removal.
Renuvion® Skin Tightening
Renuvion skin tightening uses gentle energy beneath the skin to help it contract. We often pair it with liposuction for mild to moderate loose skin. It refines results but does not replace skin removal when the excess is significant.
Facial Rejuvenation (Fat Grafting, Sculptra, Neck Lift, Facelift)
Fat grafting moves your own fat to restore lost fullness in the face. Sculptra is an injectable that helps your body rebuild volume gradually. When loose skin is the main concern, a neck lift or facelift addresses what volume alone cannot. Our surgeons and our physician assistant offer Sculptra treatments.
When Is the Right Time to Have Surgery After Weight Loss?
Often later than you hope. Surgery works best once your weight holds steady. Operating too early risks a second round of loose skin.
After bariatric surgery, we usually recommend waiting 12 to 18 months. On semaglutide, weight loss tends to level off at about one year. Research suggests surgery may be appropriate after 8 to 12 months of treatment.
Stopping the medication matters too. In the same review, people who stopped regained about two-thirds or more of the weight they had lost. If you plan to stop your GLP-1, tell us at your consultation, before we set a surgery date.

Am I a Good Candidate for Body Contouring After Weight Loss?
You may be a good candidate if you:
- Have kept a stable weight for at least six months
- Are in good general health
- Do not smoke, or can stop well before and after surgery
- Eat enough protein to support healing
- Understand that removing skin leaves scars
You may not be ready yet if you:
- Are still losing weight
- Recently started or increased your GLP-1 dose
- Have not built up your nutrition
Nutrition is easy to overlook. Your body needs protein to heal incisions and fight infection. Plastic surgery guidance recommends 60 to 120 grams of protein daily, and many GLP-1 patients fall short.
During your consultation, your surgeon will review your weight history, medications, and nutrition. Your surgeon will also assess skin quality in each area you want addressed. Some patients leave that visit with a surgery date. Others leave with a plan to return in a few months, better prepared. Both are good outcomes.

What Does Recovery Actually Look Like?
Recovery depends on which procedures you have and whether we combine them. Here is a general timeline:
- Right away: Light walking starts on day one to support circulation.
- Several days to two weeks: Drains, if used, come out. They are common after tummy tucks, body lifts, and breast surgery.
- Two to three weeks: Many patients return to desk work after a single procedure. Plan more time for combined or staged surgery.
- Four to six weeks: You can return to lifting and strenuous exercise.
- Three to six months: Swelling fades and your new shape settles.
Compression garments reduce swelling during early recovery. Individual results vary.
Why Choose Naples Aesthetic Institute for Body Contouring After Weight Loss?
We are a boutique practice, and that changes what this process feels like. Body contouring after weight loss often spans a year or more and several procedures. You see the same surgeon from your first consultation through your final follow-up. Every visit is unhurried and judgment-free.
Dr. Kiran Gill, MD, FACS, founded the practice and is one of the few female plastic surgeons in the Naples area. She is a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon with 18 years of post-medical degree experience and fellowship training in aesthetic surgery of the face, breast, and body. She has authored seven peer-reviewed publications and is a Castle Connolly Top Doctor for 2026.
Dr. Daniella Anderson, MD, is a board-eligible plastic and reconstructive surgeon. She served as Chief Resident during her six-year plastic surgery residency. She has participated in more than 7,700 surgical cases spanning breast surgery, facial rejuvenation and body contouring, and has authored four peer-reviewed publications.
Both surgeons perform their procedures themselves, in our state-registered surgical center.

Not after major weight loss. Exercise builds muscle under the skin, and good nutrition supports skin health, but neither removes excess skin. Creams and non-surgical tightening treatments help with mild looseness only. Once skin has stretched for years, surgery is the only way to remove it.
In general, body contouring is considered cosmetic and is not covered. Coverage depends on records showing the hanging skin causes rashes, infections, or hygiene problems. Requirements vary by carrier and usually include photos and treatment records. Our team can walk you through what your plan may require.
Your investment depends on which areas we treat, how many procedures we combine, and whether we stage your plan. We provide a personalized quote after your consultation.
Expect soreness, tightness, and fatigue for the first several days. We send you home with prescription pain control and a plan for managing discomfort. Many patients find the first week the hardest, with steady improvement after that.
Not always. Joint medical society guidance recommends that you, your surgeon, your anesthesia team, and your prescribing doctor decide together. Extra caution applies if you recently raised your dose, take a higher dose, or have nausea or other stomach symptoms. Your care team may ask you to follow a clear liquid diet for 24 hours before surgery to lower risk.
Yes. Combining a tummy tuck with a breast lift, or liposuction with Renuvion, means one recovery instead of two. There are limits. Removing larger amounts of tissue is linked to longer hospital stays and more revision surgery. That is why we stage bigger plans across two or three surgeries, spaced several months apart.
Less than many patients expect. The scale may drop a few pounds or more, depending on how much skin we remove. The real change is in your shape, comfort, and how clothes fit. That is why we ask that your weight be stable before surgery.
Yes, as long as your weight stays steady. Skin we remove does not grow back. Your body will still age, and a large weight gain can stretch the remaining skin. Keeping your weight stable protects your result.
The approach is the same, but where the loose skin collects is different. Men more often need chest contouring and treatment of the flanks and lower back. The goal is a flatter, more defined chest rather than a lifted breast shape. Incisions and nipple position follow male proportions.
