Breast Augmentation Candidates
Many women now choose a breast augmentation plastic surgery to increase the size of smaller breasts, creating more symmetry in the breasts, or develop a more curvaceous figure with more substantial breasts. Some women may require breast augmentation to recreate the appearance of natural breasts following a mastectomy.
Our Board-certified plastic surgeon in Naples, FL, Dr. Kiran Gill, provides breast augmentation to patients in Naples, Marco Island, South Florida, and surrounding locations.
Need for Breast Augmentation
To determine candidacy, the surgeon will first try to understand a patient’s reasons to seek a breast augmentation cosmetic surgery. She is the only person who can offer this information and let the surgeon know about the aspects of her breasts that she is unhappy about. Women commonly seek breast augmentation surgery for the following reasons:
- Achieving a more desirable or feminine body
- Replacing breast volume loss due to pregnancy or weight reduction
- Giving the breasts a more symmetrical appearance
- Enhancing breast size in proportion to the body
- Rectifying birth deformities in one or both breasts
- Increasing the size of the breasts to correct micromastia
- Recreating one or both breasts following a mastectomy
- Improving self-confidence and body image
Ideal breast enlargement surgery candidates have realistic expectations, a positive mindset, and well-defined cosmetic goals.
The candidate will need to be physically fit and healthy to undergo a significant surgery such as breast enlargement. The surgeon will assess her previous medical records, evaluate the anatomy and skin elasticity in the breast region, and order specialized mammograms if required.
The candidate should honestly inform the surgeon regarding her present medical condition to enable them to customize the surgery accordingly. She should have moderate and stable body weight and be free of any untreated infections, or cancerous or pre-cancerous breast tissue. The patient should also not be pregnant or breastfeeding.
Patients should inform the surgeon accurately regarding their smoking and drinking habits. In case the patient smokes, the surgeon will require her to quit the habit entirely for a specified period before and after the breast enlargement surgery.
The surgeon may also alter the schedule of the prescription and non-prescription medications that the patient currently takes in consultation with her physician. She should remain adequately hydrated before the surgery as well as consume a well-balanced diet with plenty of lean proteins to aid in the recovery process.
The FDA stipulates that only candidates over the age of 21 years are eligible for silicone breast implants. For the placement of saline implants, the patient must be over the age of 18. In rare cases, a woman under the age of 18 may be allowed to undergo breast enlargement to address birth deformities or repair injuries to the tissue.
Some candidates may need to undergo breast augmentation as part of their breast reconstruction surgery following a mastectomy to restore their breast appearance.
